Short version: your answers never leave your browser, and we do not ask who you are.

The recommendation quiz

The whole engine runs as JavaScript on your device. Your budget and riding answers are not sent to us or to anyone else. They are stored only in the URL after the #, which is why you can bookmark or share a result — and which, by design, browsers never transmit to a server.

Accounts and email

There are none. We have no sign-up, so there is nothing for us to lose.

Cookies

WhichBike sets no cookies of its own. When you click through to a retailer, that retailer's affiliate network will set a cookie so the sale can be attributed to us. That is governed by their privacy policy, not ours, and you can read the network's terms at awin.com/gb/privacy.

Hosting and analytics

The site is static and hosted on Netlify, which keeps standard server access logs including IP addresses. We use no third-party analytics product and set no analytics cookie.

Shared results

When you share a result, the link contains your seven answers and which bike won — a budget band, a preference for hills, that sort of thing. Those describe a bike, not you. There is no name, no email and no account, because we have none of those to put in.

Each share is given a random ten-character code so we can count how far a share travelled. It is random, not derived from you or your answers: two people sharing the same result get different codes, and so does the same person sharing twice. It measures shares, not people.

If you arrive from someone's shared link, that code is kept in your browser's session storage so that finishing the quiz can be counted against the share that sent you. Session storage is not a cookie: it is confined to that browser tab, it is deleted when you close the tab, and it is never sent anywhere by itself. We record six events — a result was produced, a share was pressed, a share went out, a shared link was opened, a referred visitor started the quiz, and one finished it. None of them carries anything that identifies you.
